Spring Drive
Definition
A Seiko regulating system in which a conventional mainspring drives the hands while a quartz oscillator and integrated circuit brake the escape wheel electromagnetically, so there is no escapement and no battery.

Spring Drive is neither mechanical nor quartz in the usual sense, and the confusion is understandable. The power comes entirely from a wound mainspring, exactly as in an automatic watch. There is no battery and no cell to replace.
What is different is the regulator. Instead of an escapement and a balance wheel releasing the gear train in discrete steps, the train drives a rotor called the glide wheel. That rotor generates a small current, which powers a quartz oscillator and an integrated circuit. The circuit compares the rotor's speed against the quartz reference and applies an electromagnetic brake to hold it at exactly eight revolutions per second.
Seiko calls the arrangement the Tri-synchro Regulator, for the three kinds of energy it handles: mechanical from the mainspring, electrical from the glide wheel, electromagnetic from the brake. The quartz crystal is cut to 32,768 Hz, the same frequency used in an ordinary quartz watch. The crucial detail is that the current is generated and consumed continuously rather than stored, and it never moves the hands. All the force turning the hands comes from the mainspring, which is why a Spring Drive has a power reserve and stops when it runs out.
The idea is old and the execution is not. Yoshikazu Akahane began work at Suwa Seikosha in 1977; attempts in 1982 and 1993 were abandoned because the reference circuit drew more power than a mainspring could supply for a usable time. The first Spring Drive watches reached the market in 1999, and the 9R calibers built for Grand Seiko followed in 2004.
The glide motion
Because nothing releases in steps, the seconds hand sweeps continuously rather than beating. It is the one visual signature that cannot be faked by a high beat mechanical movement, which still advances in discrete jumps however fast it runs. A 4 Hz movement steps eight times a second and a 5 Hz movement ten times, and a loupe shows the steps in both. A Spring Drive hand has no steps to find at any magnification.
This is also the fastest way to identify one on a wrist or in a listing photograph, and the fastest way to spot a description that is wrong about what it is selling.

Read those as monthly figures rather than daily ones. A rate specified per month is a statement about cumulative drift, and it is a different kind of promise from the daily window a mechanical chronometer is given.
Where you find it
Almost all of it is Grand Seiko, which uses the 9R family across its Heritage, Elegance, Evolution 9 and Sport lines; the Snowflake SBGA211 is the caliber 9R65 watch most people meet first, at an indicative US list around $6,300 before sales tax. Seiko has used 5R calibers in the Prospex LX line, and Credor uses the 7R14 in the Eichi II. Nobody outside Seiko builds it, and there is no licensed version.
Accuracy and repair
The published specification for the 9R family is around plus or minus one second a day, an order of magnitude tighter than a good mechanical watch and looser than a good quartz watch. Servicing is the real trade-off: this is a Seiko-only repair in practice, with turnaround measured in weeks and no independent alternative. A full Spring Drive service runs to an indicative $700 to $1,000 in the United States before sales tax, in the same band as a mainstream Swiss chronograph, and those figures move with region and model. Common confusions
It is not a quartz watch and it takes no battery. It is also not Seiko Kinetic, which charges a capacitor from a rotor and then drives the hands electrically, and it is nothing like Citizen's Eco-Drive, which is a solar-charged quartz movement. In Spring Drive the electricity regulates and never propels.
It cannot be a certified chronometer. ISO 3159, the standard behind COSC certification, applies to wrist-chronometers with a spring balance oscillator. A Spring Drive has no balance, so it is outside the standard's scope. That is a definitional exclusion, not a failure to pass.
It is not simply the best of both worlds. You get mainspring power with quartz-referenced regulation, and you pay for it with a single-source repair network and no third-party parts. If that condition is unacceptable, the honest alternatives are a conventional mechanical watch or, for pure accuracy per dollar, a good quartz one.
