Helium escape valve
Definition
A one-way valve on some diver's watches that vents helium trapped inside the case during decompression from a saturation dive in a heliox chamber.

A helium escape valve is a small one-way valve set into the side or the back of a diver's watch case, designed to let gas out without letting water in. It exists to solve one narrow problem: helium that has worked its way inside the case during a saturation dive, and which would otherwise be trapped when the pressure outside falls during decompression.
Helium is why no other gas needs this treatment. It is the smallest atom in ordinary use, monatomic and inert, and it does not so much leak past a seal as dissolve into the elastomer of a gasket and diffuse through it. Steel and sapphire hold it out; rubber, given hours at pressure, does not.
Why it exists
Commercial saturation divers live for days or weeks in a pressurized chamber breathing heliox, a helium and oxygen mixture. Helium permeates the gaskets and the crystal seal until the pressure inside the case matches the chamber, which does no harm while the pressure is high. The problem comes during decompression: the helium inside cannot escape as quickly as it entered, the case becomes internally pressurized, and it can push the crystal out of its seat.
Storage depths are commonly measured in the low hundreds of meters, and because the divers' tissues are already saturated, decompression is a single event at the end of the assignment measured in days rather than hours. That slow fall in pressure is exactly what a sealed case cannot follow, which is why the problem arrived with the saturation industry of the 1960s and not before. Rolex patented a gas escape valve in the late 1960s while supplying the French contractor COMEX, and built the Sea-Dweller around it; Doxa introduced its own at the end of the decade.
How the valve works
The valve is a spring-loaded plug seated against a gasket in a bore through the case flank, usually at nine or ten o'clock. While the outside is at or above the inside, ambient pressure and the spring hold it shut. When the inside exceeds the outside by the margin the spring is set for, the plug lifts, gas vents around it, and it reseals as soon as the difference closes. There is no path the other way. What it protects is the crystal: a plug held by an interference fit and a gasket, very strong against pressure from outside and much weaker against pressure from within.
Manual or automatic
Automatic valves need nothing from the wearer and are the more common arrangement. Manual valves are unscrewed during decompression and screwed shut afterward, which is the only way this part can harm an ordinary owner, since an unscrewed valve is an open hole. Omega fits a manually operated conical valve to the Seamaster Diver 300M and states that it can be operated with the watch submerged, which earlier screw-down valves could not. Either kind is another gasket, replaced at service and included when the case is pressure tested.
Who actually needs one
Almost nobody. The valve is relevant only to saturation diving in a helium-rich chamber. Recreational and technical diving on air or nitrox, freediving, snorkeling, swimming and showering involve no helium at all, so the valve does nothing. It is not a water resistance feature, it does not help a watch go deeper, and it is not required by ISO 6425. Is 100 m water resistance enough is the more useful question to ask of a spec sheet.
What the standard says
ISO 6425 does not require a valve. It sets a floor of 100 meters and asks for a protected timing device, legibility in darkness, a visible indication that the watch is running, resistance to salt water, magnetism and shock, and testing of every individual watch rather than a sample. Separately it addresses watches intended for diving in a saturated gas-rich atmosphere, which must be tested in that condition and marked accordingly. A valve is one way to pass, not the requirement.
The other way is to keep the helium out. Several manufacturers build saturation-capable divers with no valve at all, using a one-piece case and gasket geometry that resists ingress in the first place. Seiko is the best-known example. Common misconceptions
The valve does not let water out of a flooded watch. It is a one-way device that releases outward pressure, and a watch that has taken in water needs immediate service. Nor does it vent moisture: fog under the crystal is condensation from water or humid air that is already inside.
It does not raise the depth rating either. Valves appear on watches rated from about 300 meters upward, but the rating comes from the case, the gaskets and the crystal. What a valve adds to an ordinary watch is another opening, another gasket to age, and sometimes a control that must be kept screwed shut.
