Longines Spirit: the 40 mm and 42 mm chronometer
The verdict
The Spirit is one of the few watches under $3,000 where every single example is COSC certified, with an exclusive ETA-based caliber and a silicon balance spring. It is very well specified and very ordinary to look at. If you want the money back when you sell, buy something else: Longines depreciates hard.

The Longines Spirit is a pilot-styled three-hand automatic with a date at three o'clock, sold in 40 mm and 42 mm steel cases on a leather strap or a steel bracelet. The design borrows from Longines' own 1930s aviation watches: large Arabic numerals, a long central seconds hand, blued or rhodium-plated hands, and five stars printed under the brand name. This page describes the three-hand Spirit introduced in 2020. Longines has since built out the family with the Spirit Zulu Time GMT, a flyback chronograph and a smaller Spirit Pilot, all of which use different calibers and different cases.
What makes the Spirit worth a page is not the styling, which is competent rather than original. It is that the whole line is submitted for chronometer certification, and that the movement is built to Longines' own specification with a silicon balance spring. The specification
Longines publishes less than most buyers expect. Its product pages give diameter, water resistance, crystal, beat rate, power reserve and certification, and stop there. Thickness, lug-to-lug distance and lug width are absent, which is the single most annoying thing about shopping for one online.

Forty or forty-two, and why it is not a two millimeter question
The two Spirits are separate cases rather than one case scaled. The 42 mm is wider, taller through the middle, longer between the lug tips and fitted with a wider strap. On a 16 cm wrist, about 6.3 inches, the 40 mm sits flat with the lug tips inside the edge of the wrist bone. The 42 mm reaches the edge and, on flatter wrists, past it, which is the point at which a watch stops looking like it belongs to you. Diameter is the number everyone quotes and lug-to-lug is the number that decides the fit, as our explanation of lug-to-lug distance sets out.
Neither is a slim watch. Both are around 12 to 13 mm thick with a box-flat crystal and a solid caseback, and the bracelet adds visual bulk over the top of the lug. Under a shirt cuff the 40 mm disappears; the 42 mm catches. The caliber, and living with it
The L888.4 is not an off-the-shelf part. ETA builds it for Longines on architecture descended from the 2892, running slower than that ancestor at 25,200 vibrations per hour to buy a longer power reserve, and fitted with a monocrystalline silicon balance spring. It winds automatically, hand-winds through the crown, and hacks, so you can set it to a time signal.
In practice the certification shows. A COSC movement is tested uncased, so the certificate describes the movement rather than the finished watch, and casing can shift the rate by a second or two either way. Owners commonly report a Spirit settling somewhere between about two seconds slow and four seconds fast per day in normal wear, which is inside the certified band and better than the honest expectation for an uncertified automatic. The silicon spring matters for a specific failure. Steel hairsprings magnetize, coils cling together, and the watch suddenly gains minutes a day; our guide to magnetism and watches explains why that happens and how to spot it. Silicon cannot be magnetized, so that failure is designed out. It is not the same as an antimagnetic certification, because the rest of the escapement is steel and Longines publishes no gauss figure.
What COSC certification actually buys
The test runs fifteen days, in five positions, at three temperatures, and all seven criteria must pass, not just the headline rate. Two honest limits. Certification is a floor, not a promise about your watch three years from now, because rate drifts as oil ages. And plenty of uncertified movements keep fine time. What certification removes is the guesswork, which at this price is unusual enough to be the main reason to choose it.
What it is good at
The Spirit answers a narrow question well: one mechanical watch, worn daily, that needs no excuses made for its timekeeping and does not cost five figures. The dial is legible in the way pilot dials are supposed to be, the lume is generous, 10 bar covers swimming without thought, and the five-year warranty beats most of the competition. It is also easy to buy, which sounds trivial until you have spent a year on a waiting list.
What is wrong with it
The date window is the recurring complaint. On the 42 mm it crowds the numeral at three o'clock, and on both sizes the white date disc against a dark dial breaks the calm of the layout. Longines has never addressed it.
The case is thicker than the design deserves. A flat pilot dial with no bezel invites a slim case, and 12 to 13 mm is not slim; the 40 mm carries it, the 42 mm does not always. The bracelet clasp has no on-the-fly micro-adjustment, which is a real omission on a watch that expands and contracts with the weather, and the published specification is thin enough that you cannot judge fit without handling one.
And the design is derivative. It is a well-executed anthology of aviation-watch cues rather than a shape anyone would recognize across a room. That is a matter of taste, but it feeds directly into the next section.
What it costs, new and used
All figures below are indicative US list prices, quoted before sales tax, which varies by state, and they move with the market, with discounting and with annual increases. Longines lists the steel-bracelet Spirit at roughly $2,500 to $3,000 depending on size, dial and bracelet, with leather-strap versions a little under that. Check the current number before you plan around it, and note that the list in your own country will differ, because local tax, import duty and distribution all move it. Authorized dealers discount, and grey-market sellers discount more, which matters for the paragraph that follows.
Secondhand, expect a clean Spirit with box and papers to trade somewhere around half to two thirds of its list price, and closer to half than to two thirds once it is a few years old. That is not a scandal, it is arithmetic: production is large, supply is easy, and the name does not carry a scarcity premium. The alternatives, and when each is the better answer
If you want the same aviation idea with a five-day power reserve, an in-house-family caliber and a soft-iron magnetic shield, the IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XX is the watch the Spirit is measured against. It is roughly twice the price, it is not chronometer certified, and it is the better buy only if the case work and the name matter to you as much as the numbers do.
If you actually swim, dive or work outdoors, 10 bar and a flat bezel are the wrong tools. The Oris Aquis Date gives 30 bar, a timing bezel and a ceramic insert for broadly the same money, at the cost of considerably more watch on the wrist.
If you want a chronograph rather than a time-and-date watch, the TAG Heuer Carrera is the obvious step across, though it costs roughly twice as much and depreciates at least as steeply. And if the Spirit's appeal is simply a well-made Swiss automatic at a sane price, read buying your first mechanical watch before you narrow the field, because the Spirit is a good answer to a question you should make sure you are asking.
Common follow-up questions
Is every Longines Spirit really COSC certified?
Longines presents chronometer certification as a defining feature of the Spirit line, and its product pages describe the watches as chronometer-certified by COSC. The certificate applies to the movement, tested uncased over fifteen days before it goes into your watch. Check the individual reference you are buying rather than assuming, because Longines uses the Spirit name across three-hand, GMT and chronograph models with different calibers.
Does the silicon hairspring make the Spirit antimagnetic?
It makes the most magnetically vulnerable single component immune. Silicon cannot be magnetized, so the classic failure mode, coils of the balance spring sticking together and the watch gaining minutes a day, is off the table. The rest of the escapement is still steel, and Longines publishes no gauss rating for the watch. Treat it as strongly resistant rather than certified antimagnetic.
Should I buy the 40 mm or the 42 mm?
The 40 mm suits most wrists under about 17.5 cm, roughly 7 inches, and is the safer buy secondhand, because more people can wear it. The 42 mm is not simply two millimeters wider: it is taller through the case and longer across the lugs, and the extra lug width changes the strap options. If you cannot try both, take the 40 mm.
Why does a Spirit lose so much value?
Because Longines makes a lot of them, they are easy to buy new at a discount, and the name carries little scarcity premium. None of that is a fault in the watch. It is the ordinary consequence of a large production run in a competitive price band, and it is the same reason the watch is good value to buy in the first place.
