Is Seiko a good watch brand?
Short answer
Yes, and it is unusual in how far down the price ladder that stays true. Seiko designs and manufactures its own movements, hairsprings, mainsprings and quartz crystals, and sells watches from under $100 to well past $10,000. Those are indicative US figures quoted before sales tax, and a list price outside the US moves with local tax, import duty and distribution. The tradeoff is that entry-level tolerances are wide and published rate specifications are loose, so unit-to-unit variance is real.

Yes, on the record. Seiko is one of a small number of watch companies that designs and manufactures its own movements at every price tier it sells in, including the components most brands buy from specialists, and it has done so continuously since it began making wristwatches in 1913.
The caveat is worth stating in the same breath. Seiko covers an enormous price range, from watches under $100 to Grand Seiko pieces well into five figures, and what is true of one end is not true of the other. The name alone does not tell you what you are getting.
What vertical integration actually means here
Most watch brands assemble. Seiko manufactures. The company makes its own hairsprings and mainsprings from alloys it developed, grows its own quartz crystals, produces its own dials, hands and cases, and formulates its own lubricants. Very few companies in the world can say all of that, and it is the single most defensible fact in Seiko's favor.
The practical consequence is that Seiko does not depend on anyone else's supply. When Swiss movement supply to third parties tightened over the past two decades, it changed the plans of many brands and none of Seiko's. It also means the company can put a genuinely in-house automatic into a watch that costs less than a nice pair of shoes, because the development cost is spread across production volumes almost nobody else operates at.
The history behind that is not marketing. The company began as K. Hattori and Company in Tokyo in 1881, moved into clock manufacture in the 1890s, and produced the Astron in December 1969, the first quartz wristwatch sold commercially. Whatever you think of the brand today, its engineering record is a matter of public documentation.

Read that table as the answer to most Seiko questions. The jump from the 4R tier to the 6R tier is a real narrowing of the rate window, and the jump to 9S is another one entirely.
Where the quality control complaints come from
The recurring criticism of entry-level Seiko is not about durability. It is about cosmetic consistency: chapter rings rotated slightly out of alignment with the dial, hands set a fraction off center at twelve, bezel inserts marginally out of true, and rate performance that varies noticeably from one example of the same reference to the next.
The explanation is unglamorous. These are high-volume watches assembled to a price, and Seiko's own published rate window at that tier, roughly minus 35 to plus 45 seconds a day, is wide enough that a watch running well outside what an enthusiast would accept is still within specification. Nothing is being hidden. The tolerance is printed.
Two mitigations are worth knowing. A watch running fast or slow within the published range can usually be regulated by any competent watchmaker for a modest bench fee, which often brings a 4R caliber to within a few seconds a day. And buying in person lets you check alignment under a loupe before money changes hands.
Grand Seiko is a separate proposition
Grand Seiko began in 1960 as Seiko's attempt to build a watch to the highest chronometric standards of the day, and since 2017 it has been marketed internationally as its own brand rather than as a Seiko line. The movements are built in dedicated studios, and the finishing, particularly the Zaratsu-polished case surfaces and the hand-finished dials, is the reason for the price.
Grand Seiko also runs its own inspection standard rather than relying on outside certification. The Grand Seiko Standard tests movements over more days, in more positions and at more temperatures than the widely quoted Swiss chronometer criteria, and the company publishes a tighter special standard above it. That is an internal standard rather than a third-party one, which is a fair thing to note in either direction.
Buying and owning one
Seiko is sold through authorized dealers in most countries, Grand Seiko through its own boutiques and selected retailers, and both are supported by regional service operations. Warranty terms differ by line and by where the watch is bought, and the gray market is unusually active for Seiko, so a watch bought from an unauthorized seller may carry no manufacturer warranty at all in your country.
On value, the honest framing is specification and engineering for the money, which Seiko delivers consistently at every tier. What nobody should tell you is how any watch will perform on resale, Seiko included.
Common follow-up questions
Are Seiko movements repairable outside a Seiko service center?
The common automatic calibers are, and they are among the most familiar movements on any watchmaker's bench anywhere. Parts for current 4R and NH-series calibers are widely available. Grand Seiko calibers, Spring Drive and the high-accuracy 9F quartz are a different matter and generally go back to the manufacturer.
What is the difference between a Seiko NH35 and a 4R35?
They are the same basic movement from different distribution channels. The 4R designation is used in Seiko's own watches; the NH designation comes from Seiko Instruments and is sold to other manufacturers, which is why so many small brands list it. Published rate specifications differ slightly between the two designations.
Is Spring Drive quartz or mechanical?
Both, in a specific sense. A mainspring provides all the power and there is no battery, but instead of an escapement the movement is regulated electronically by a quartz reference, with a magnetic brake controlling the glide wheel. The seconds hand sweeps continuously rather than ticking, which is the visible signature.
Does Seiko make dive watches that meet ISO 6425?
Some lines do and some do not, and the distinction is printed on the dial. Watches tested to the divers' standard carry a marking that includes the word DIVER'S together with a depth rating. A watch marked only with a depth in meters is water resistant to that pressure but has not been certified to the divers' standard.
