Is a tourbillon worth the money?

Short answer

Not if you are buying accuracy. A tourbillon rotates the escapement to average out gravity's effect on the balance, which solved a real problem for pocket watches held in one position all day. A wrist moves constantly and averages those errors on its own. Buy a tourbillon because the mechanism and the hand work are beautiful, not because it keeps better time.

If the question is whether a tourbillon buys you better timekeeping on the wrist, the honest answer is no. It was invented to solve a problem that a pocket watch has and a wristwatch mostly does not, and every serious analysis since has said so.

If the question is whether a tourbillon is worth owning, that is a different question with a defensible yes attached to it. You are buying one of the hardest things in watchmaking to build well, executed in miniature, visible while it works. That is a legitimate thing to spend money on, provided you know that is what you bought.

What the mechanism actually does

A balance wheel is a weighted ring that swings back and forth on a hairspring. If the balance is not perfectly poised, meaning its mass is not perfectly distributed around its axis, gravity pulls harder on the heavy side. When the watch is lying flat that pull acts along the balance staff and does almost nothing. When the watch is standing on edge, gravity alternately helps and hinders the swing, and the watch gains or loses accordingly.

A tourbillon mounts the balance, hairspring and escapement in a rotating carriage, usually turning once a minute. Over each rotation the heavy point passes through every vertical orientation, so the errors in the various vertical positions cancel out and the watch settles on their average.

Two limits follow directly from that description, and they are rarely stated in marketing copy. The averaging only works among vertical positions, so it does nothing about the difference between dial up and dial down. And the carriage itself has mass that gravity acts on, which the watchmaker has to poise as carefully as the balance.

Why it was invented, and for whom

Abraham-Louis Breguet received his patent in 1801, at a time when a gentleman's watch spent its entire day in a vest pocket, in one of a very small number of orientations, usually pendant up. Positional error under those conditions is not averaged by anything. It simply accumulates, day after day, in the same direction.

Under that constraint, a device that rotates the escapement through every vertical position each minute is an excellent piece of engineering. Breguet was not being decorative. He was addressing the single largest source of rate error in the watches of his time, and the tourbillon was a serious and expensive answer to it.

What actually controls positional error today

The century after Breguet produced several cheaper answers to the same problem, and every one of them is in wide use.

A well-regulated modern automatic with a properly poised balance and a good hairspring will hold a few seconds a day across positions. That is the same territory a tourbillon occupies, reached by a route that costs a tiny fraction as much.

The complication has not been shown to be useless at the top end. A double tourbillon has recorded the highest score in the international chronometry competition held at Le Locle, which demonstrates that a tourbillon built with enough skill can time superbly. What that result actually demonstrates is the skill.

What you are paying for

The bill is labor, not materials. A tourbillon carriage is an assembly of very small parts that must together weigh almost nothing, be perfectly balanced about its axis, and rotate without introducing friction into an escapement that already runs on a fraction of a gram of force. It is a standard test piece for the final year of a watchmaking apprenticeship precisely because it is difficult.

Around that sits the rest of the money: hand finishing on the carriage and bridges, an aperture in the dial and often a sapphire case back to display it, a movement architecture designed around the visible mechanism, and low production numbers spreading fixed development costs across few watches.

So should you buy one

Buy a tourbillon if you find the mechanism genuinely absorbing, you want an object that shows visible craft, and the money is discretionary in the real sense. Those are the conditions under which nobody who owns one regrets it.

Do not buy one expecting better accuracy, and be skeptical of any seller who leads with that claim, because it has been understood as inaccurate for a long time. If accuracy is what you want, a chronometer-certified automatic or a good quartz watch will outperform almost any tourbillon for a very small fraction of the price.

There is also a middle case worth naming. Low-cost tourbillons now exist, largely from Chinese manufacture, from around $2,000 before sales tax, though what you pay depends on the market and those figures move, and buying one across a border adds import duty and local tax. They are real rotating carriages, and they let you own the mechanism without a life-changing purchase. What they generally do not include is the hand finishing and the adjustment that the expensive versions are actually selling, so judge them as an interesting mechanism rather than as the same thing cheaper.

Common follow-up questions

Does a tourbillon make a watch less durable?

It adds parts and complexity, so there is more that can go out of adjustment, and the rotating carriage is delicate. Modern examples are built to be worn and are not fragile in normal use. The practical concern is not breakage but that a repair requires a specialist rather than any competent watchmaker.

What is a flying tourbillon?

One supported only from below, with no bridge over the top of the carriage, so the whole rotating assembly appears to float. It was developed at the German watchmaking school in Glashütte in the 1920s. It is harder to build and harder to keep stable, and it exists mainly so the mechanism can be seen unobstructed.

Can a tourbillon be COSC certified?

Yes. Nothing about the construction prevents it, and some are certified. Many are not, because the brands selling them treat chronometry certification as beside the point and their buyers do not ask. That in itself tells you what the complication is being sold as.

Are inexpensive tourbillons real tourbillons?

Mechanically, usually yes: a rotating carriage carrying the balance and escapement. The differences are in finishing, poising, materials and adjustment, which is where nearly all the labor in an expensive one goes. A low-cost tourbillon is a real mechanism executed quickly, not a fake one, but confirm it is not a fixed decorative aperture pretending to rotate.
